"This Fraternity will be different."
These words were part of the founding documents when Sigma Phi Epsilon ("SigEp") was founded in 1901 at Richmond College.
SigEp has a very long and storied history at Cal. We were founded sometime between November 1904 and Fall 1906 as the Palomar Club, but it wasn't until 1910 that the Palomar Club decided to become a part of SigEp. SigEp at Cal was chartered as the first chapter on the west coast.
Since its founding in 1901 at the University of Richmond, SigEp has sought to be a leader in the fraternity world. SigEp is unafraid to be different--we were the first traditional fraternity to open membership to men of color, men of any faith, gay men, and transgender men; the first national fraternity to abolish pledging; and the first to adopt a national substance-free housing policy written by our undergraduate brothers.
SigEp seeks to challenge all brothers to #RaiseYourBar and build balanced leaders for the world's communities. Our mission is to recruit the best men, provide them with the best experiences, and surround them in the best environments. SigEp adopted the Balanced Man Program, which focuses on a commitment to the principles of a Sound Mind and Sound Body, as a four-year, self-paced personal development program through which we aim to improve upon our brother's strengths and interests to help them achieve their personal goals and attain a fulfilling college experience.
We are a community where brothers strive to grow together and excel in all aspects of life: academically, professionally, physically, and socially. Here at SigEp at Cal, our brothers come from all around the globe and are leaders in campus organizations, presidents of honor societies, and participate in club and varsity athletics. Our alumni have gone on to attend graduate school at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and other prestigious institutions, and pursue careers in medicine, law, public office, and tech (Google, Facebook, etc.).
